Throughout the course of his life, Indian sadhu Amar Bharati has been holding his right arm up in the air for almost 50 years in a gesture of devotion to Hindu deity Shiva. While many people hold their arms up in the air for a few minutes, Amar holds his hand up for an entire day. This is because, according to Bharati, raising his arm in the air for just a few minutes is enough to cause pain.

The 66-year-old monk became a sadhu in the early 1970s. He had worked in an Indian bank before he started living a recluse lifestyle. After an epiphany, he left his family and friends and dedicated himself to serving Shiva.

Before his life as a sadhu, Amar worked as a clerk in New Delhi. He married and had three children. In 1973, Bharati decided to leave his family and career to pursue his life as a Sadhu. He felt that his life was too closely connected to the luxury and comforts of the mortal world.
