Newhouse was born in 1927 to a Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey. His father, Samuel Newhouse Sr., was a newspaper publisher who founded Advance Publications. Donald Newhouse attended private schools growing up, including the Pingry School and Lawrenceville School.
He then went on to study at Syracuse University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1949. After college, Newhouse joined his father’s business as an assistant circulation manager for The Staten Island Advance. He later became the vice president of operations for the company.

Steven O. Newhouse (born September 7, 1945) is an American businessman and the chairman of Advance Publications. He is the son of S.I. Newhouse Jr., and his sister is Dorothy Scripps Phelps. Newhouse was born in Staten Island, New York, the son of Mitzi (née Epstein) and Samuel Irving Newhouse Jr.
His father was the founder of Advance Publications, which owns newspapers including The Star-Ledger, The Plain Dealer and The Times-Picayune, as well as magazines such as Condé Nast Portfolio, Vanity Fair, Vogue and The New Yorker. His sister is Dorothy Scripps Phelps. He attended the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey and graduated from Harvard College in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in History & Literature.
While at Harvard he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (Phi chapter). He later received a Master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1968.
