How Much Money Would It Cost To Build A Murphy Bed?

A Murphy bed is a unique piece of furniture that allows you to easily convert your extra living space into a spare bedroom when you have guests over or when you need an added sleeping space in your home. But the question on many people’s minds when thinking about converting their room into a Murphy bed is, How much does it cost? This short guide will help you learn how much money it will take to construct your own Murphy bed and where to find the materials and tools you’ll need to get started.

Build A Murphy Bed cost

Murphy beds are typically built from plywood, with the exception of mattress support. The mattress support is typically made of either wood or metal. There are kits that can be purchased for this purpose, but they are not very sturdy and will not last long. The dimensions of the panel that you cut out should match the size of your mattress, so make sure you measure carefully before cutting anything out.

It’s important to note that a Murphy bed needs more than just two panels; there needs to be an extra one on each side in order for it to fold up and down properly. After you’ve constructed all six panels and attached hinges, attach them together in an L shape with brackets or screws.

Things to Consider When Building a Murphy Bed

1. Measure the space you have available and make sure that you can fit your mattress in the space.

2. Consider what type of headboard you want on your bed, or if you do not want one at all. There are many different types of headboards and rails available for purchase, but they will depend on the size of your mattress and how high off the ground the bed needs to be.

3. Make sure that you have enough room to fit a desk or other furniture underneath your new Murphy Bed. If not, then consider building an enclosure so that there is an out-of-the-way place for these items to go when they are not needed most of the time (i.e., when guests come over).

Cost of Labor

Labor costs are one of the most significant expenses in building your Murphy bed. They will account for about 40% of the total cost. Skilled carpenters, joiners, and cabinetmakers typically charge between $25-$50 an hour for their labor. Depending on what kind of construction materials you are using and the complexity of your design, you may need one or more people working on this project for several hours per day over several days (or even weeks).

Your time is worth something too, so be sure to factor in some time spent planning and shopping for materials as well.

Cost of Material

The cost of the materials can vary depending on what type of wood you use. The best material for this project is Pine because it is lightweight and easy to work with. You will need 2x4s, plywood, 2 inch wide boards, door hinges, screws and nails. The total cost for all the materials will be $70-$100 depending on where you buy them from.  If you want to purchase everything at one store that might have better prices on their materials, the total could be around $85.
