Chikmagalur: Why is this a Must visit place

Introduction

Chikmagalur is a beautiful district situated in the western part of Karnataka. It is famous for its coffee plantations and pleasant climate. Another popular attraction that Chikmagalur is known for is its Bababudan Giri ranges. Though this was among the underexplored destinations, this hill station thanks to its greenery and picturesque landscapes has earned a lot of attention from tourists from across. The literal meaning of the name Chikmagalur is ‘Land of the younger daughter.’

There is a rich history behind how Chikmagalur got its name. It is told that years ago the land of this district was given as a dowry to the younger daughter of the legendary chief, Rukmangada who ruled Sakrepatna. And this is how it was named. Chikmagalur has rugged terrains, stunning mountain regions, and lowlands too. As it is situated amidst beautiful landscapes and untouched environs, this is one destination that one must explore.

People here also believe that coffee was first made in Chikmagalur. When we ask the locals here and they will tell us that Babu Budan who was a Muslim saint brought the coffee seeds here in 1670 from Yemen and cultivated them here. And the plantations just grew from there and the British also played a big role in the growth. The Central Coffee Research Institution is located here.

Apart from all this, the waterfalls of this region also drew a lot of travelers. There are many waterfalls located in this district as the famous Hebbe falls, Shanti waterfalls, and several others. Chikmagalur is the birthplace to many renowned freedom fighters, intellectuals and also poets, and politicians. Indira Gandhi even once represented Chikmagalur in the Indian Parliament. 

Places to visit

Mullayanagiri

Mullayanagiri is one of the best highlights in Chikmagalur. The highest peak in Karnataka stands tall at 2000 meters here. This place is a favorite among many trekkers since it has some scenic trekking and really challenging trails. For those who do not really prefer adventure activities, they can also consider this place to do nature walks. At the top of the peak, one will also see a beautiful temple that has been built in dedication to Shiva.

Many devotees out of faith and sheer dedication trek their way up to this temple. This is located approximately 12 km from Chikmagalur and this is going to be one the best experience when one visit this beautiful hill station. The stunning hills with cool breeze gift us with a pleasant feeling. One will find numerous points here that offer breathtaking views.

Kalhatti falls

Apart from these attractions, Chikmagalur is also popular to have many waterfalls. Kalhatti falls can be enjoyed alone or with people. The water cascading from an altitude of 400 feet above is a sight to behold. What makes this waterfall really scenic is the surroundings. The Drona Hill covers most part of the surrounding area and one will also find a scenic and small Temple nearby that was built for Shiva.

Waterfalls are a sight that any nature lover will love. With dense foliage and lush greenery, this waterfall is something that must be explored. This waterfall also has multiple options and routes for trekking. A walk through the forest here is indeed very exciting. Many people choose to come here in the past to camp in the surrounding area as well.

Once we reach the top, we will be treated to breathtaking views of the water falling down in all its force.

Manikyadhara falls

Another great highlight is the Manikyadhara falls which is also another most visited attraction. This waterfall is a good place to visit with family and friends. The Manikyadhara waterfalls also have exciting trekking trails. Located in Shola Forest, the views of the water cascading are something that one must visit. And the best part about this waterfall is that one can view the falls at any time of the year.

There is an interesting legend about this Manikyadhara Waterfalls and that once a Sufi saint named Hazrat Dada Hayath Khalandar visited this region. He was accompanied by his four disciples and this group was in search of water. However, they couldn’t find water for a long time so they prayed to God for help. Miraculously, their prayers were heard and a waterfall cascaded there.

And this is the reason why the waterfall is considered holy by so many people. People who visit this place, especially believers often offer their prayers to this saint. As per locals, it is also believed that taking a dip in these waters will give them relaxation since it is said to have therapeutic powers. Another interesting part about this waterfall is that the water remains cold all through the year, even during summer.
